Custom Library Case Study

The Clients Problem

Another project we completed in Lisa & Carl's Derbyshire cottage is this custom laddered bookcase (head to the portfolio page to see more projects we completed in this property). The refurbishment they had done left this awkward space at the end of their living room, and they were in need of more storage for books.

Our Solution

The floor to ceiling height was around 2.7 metres - to use all the space we fitted the hardwood front frame of the cabinet with a handmade ladder built from solid oak with brass fittings allowing the client to get to the top shelves of the cabinets easily. We built the cabinetry in a lacquered oak finish for ease of cleaning and all shelves fitted with a 35mm wide solid oak lip jointed to the front edge to prevent the shelves from bowing under the weight of the books over time. The front frame is made as one piece and scribed into the cottage walls as seen in the photos.

The Results

We handmade and fully fitted this custom library, completed to the clients specifications. Lisa & Carl said the following: "Mike has exceeded all our expectations! The moment we met him he blew the competition away, and we knew we had to have him. It was worth the wait and every penny! He accurately translated our requests into great ideas, and executed them perfectly. The quality of materials used, and his joinery skills are fabulous, and he is professional, communicative, and on time. Thank you so much to you and your Dad Mike."
